Dutch Healthcare Authority published draft release of the DRG package for 2023

Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa) has issued a draft release of the DRG package for 2023, including a new procedure code for intermittent pneumatic compression therapy, a new diagnosis code for guidance in early pregnancy after a fertility program, and several new DRGs for pediatric palliative care, lymphovenous anastomosis surgery and light therapy in inflammatory dermatoses.

New procedure codes introduced in December 2021 in Finland

In mid-December 2021, 44 new procedure codes were introduced by the Code Service of the Finnish National Health and Wellbeing Institution (THL). The introduced codes are dedicated to substance abuse, psychological counseling and rehabilitation, palliative care, anesthesia, and sedation. No updates related to medical technologies were introduced.

Changes in the Danish Health Care Classification System in January 2022

In mid-December 2021, the Danish Health Data Agency (Sundhedsstyrelsen) published the Health Care Classification System (Sundheds-væsenets Klassifikations System, SKS). The most significant changes include: 41 new diagnosis codes and 21 procedure codes were added. The newly added procedure codes concern mainly spine area and orthopedic procedures.

New procedure and diagnostic codes added to the private reimbursement schedule in England

In November 2021, the Clinical Coding and Schedule Development (CCSD) working group, which develops and maintains procedural and diagnostics nomenclature for private payers in England, has published Bulletins 0180 and 0077 with changes to be implemented no later than February 01, 2022. Four new procedure codes related to neurology, spinal procedures, cancer pharmacotherapy, and ophthalmology, and three new diagnostic codes were introduced.

2022 Swedish procedure coding classification (KVÅ) released

In November 2021, the National Board of Health and Welfare released an annual update of the Swedish procedure coding classification (Classification of Health Care Measures, KVÅ) that will come into force in January 2022. KVÅ includes two parts – medical procedures (KMÅ) and surgical procedures (KKÅ) divided into chapters based on anatomical principles. In 2022, six new surgical procedure codes will be introduced. Furthermore, structural changes will be made in Chapter V "Operations on the aorta, peripheral vessels, and lymphatic system," introducing two new sub-chapters with 318 new codes. A total of 53 new medical procedure codes (KMÅ) will be added.

The final version of the 2022 OPS procedure coding classification released in Germany

In late October 2021, the BfArM (Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices) has published the final version of the 2022 OPS procedure coding classification. The OPS, together with the ICD-10-GM (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision, German Modification), forms the basis for the reimbursement systems in outpatient and inpatient care.

New procedure and diagnostic codes added to the private reimbursement schedule in England

In late September 2021, the Clinical Coding and Schedule Development (CCSD) working group, which develops and maintains procedural and diagnostics nomenclature for private payers in England, has published Bulletins 0179 and 0076 with changes to be implemented no later than January 01, 2022. Four new procedure codes related to gynecology, robotic surgery in the pulmonology area, and orthopedics, and four new diagnostic codes were introduced.

2022 DRG (LKF) model published in Austria

In late September 2021, the Austrian version of the DRG system (LKF) 2022 model with the relevant supplementary documents was published in Austria. The document "Changes and innovations in the 2022 LKF model" (Änderungen und Neuerungen in den LKF-Modellen 2022) summarizes the most significant changes and innovations in the LKF model for inpatient and outpatient care. The newly added procedure codes concern mainly the cardiovascular, E-Health, and gastrointestinal area.

Changes in the Danish Health Care Classification System in October 2021

The newly added procedure codes concern mainly pulmonary and airways area and neuromodulation procedures.

The preliminary version of the 2022 procedure coding (OPS) system released in Germany

On August 16, 2021, the preliminary version of OPS 2022 was published. Numerous content updates and new procedure codes concern chapters 5 “Operations” and 8 “Non-operative therapeutic measures”. Also, minor changes were made in chapters 1, “Diagnostic measures” and 3, “Diagnostic imaging”.New codes were introduced in the peripheral vascular, cardiovascular, nephrology and urology, endoscopy, gastroenterology, otorhinolaryngology, interventional radiology, orthopedics, pulmonary and airways, and other fields of care.
