Med Tech-related health technology assessments from NIHR in May 2024
The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) funds valuable independent research for health and social care decision-makers in England. Reports from the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme are published in the NIHR HTA Journal and inform NICE guidance.
In May 2024, one MedTech-related assessment was published in the NIHR HTA Journal:
- Doppler ultrasound surveillance of a recently formed hemodialysis arteriovenous fistula based on a prospective multicenter observational cohort study (SONAR). The aim was to assess the feasibility of performing a randomized controlled trial that examines whether, by informing early and effective salvage intervention of fistulas that would otherwise fail, Doppler ultrasound surveillance of developing arteriovenous fistulas improves longer-term arteriovenous fistula patency. It was concluded that, although early ultrasound can predict fistula maturation and longer-term patency very effectively, it was only moderately good at identifying those fistulas likely to remain immature or to fail within six months. It was estimated that a randomized controlled trial comparing early ultrasound-guided intervention against standard care would require at least 1300 fistulas and would achieve only minimal patient benefit.
