Designation of Benchmark centers of the Spanish National Health System in November 2025
The Ministry of Health decides on which pathologies and procedures can be considered rare or complex and require treatment in so-called benchmark centers, departments, and units of the National Health System (CSURs) and designates such centers for certain pathologies or procedures.
In November 2025, the Agreement on new pathologies and procedures for the care of which it is necessary to designate CSURs was approved. One new procedure was introduced – surgery for complex central airway stenosis in adults, for which no CSURs have been designated yet.
In addition, the Agreement on the designation, redesignation, and revocation of CSURs was approved. Several centers were accredited for new pathologies or procedures in the endocrine, endoscopy, gastrointestinal, nephrology and urology, neurology and neurosurgery, and neurovascular fields. Some examples are provided below:
- Adrenocortical cancer (adults and children) – two centers;
- Complex esophageal resection or reconstruction surgery in adults – two centers;
- Pediatric kidney tumors – one center;
- Complex intracranial aneurysm and cerebral revascularization in adults – two centers.
Furthermore, several CSURs were designated or redesignated for previously approved pathologies and procedures in the neurology and neurosurgery, and neuromodulation fields. Some examples are provided below:
- Brachial plexus surgery – five centers;
- Brain and spinal cord neuromodulation for refractory neuropathic pain – eight centers.
