Danish Treatment Council published its first two recommendations

On February 1, 2023, the Treatment Council made its first two recommendations based on the major analysis reports:

  • Treatment Council did not recommend a general implementation of handheld pocket-sized ultrasound scanners for point-of-care examinations in the emergency department. This is because, currently, no overall added value can be seen for the use of handheld ultrasound scanners compared to non-handheld ultrasound scanners, as the literature review indicates uncertainty, especially about the risk of false negative findings. The Treatment Council pointed out that this is of particular importance in an emergency medical setting;
  • The Treatment Council did not recommend the implementation of computer-aided-detection-assisted (CADe) colonoscopy as decision support for the diagnosis of neoplastic disease. This is because CADe colonoscopy may pose a risk to patient safety due to the increased number of superfluous tissue samples and partly lead to unnecessary additional activity in hospitals and the overtreatment of patients.

Both recommendations have a limited duration and are valid until Q1 2025, partly because both technologies are constantly developing, which may affect the evidence base in the future.

The Treatment Council's recommendations are now being sent to the Interregional Forum for coordination of the Treatment Council's recommendations, which will support the implementation of the recommendations across the regions.
