Genetic test to prevent child deafening being implemented in England

A new test called Genedrive System to detect babies at risk of gentamycin-related deafness was developed at the University of Manchester, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). On April 02, 2022, NHS England and NHS Improvement announced that Genedrive is now fully CE certified to be used in a clinical setting. The test is expected to be implemented in routine care in all NHS Manchester Foundation Trust hospitals within several weeks.

Published health technology assessments in Wales in Q1 of 2022

In Q1 of 2022, Health Technology Wales (HTW) published one MedTech-related guidance on transcranial magnetic stimulation in depression treatment. A total of eleven Topic Exploration Reports (TERs) were released in Q1. Based on the TERs conclusions, HTW's Assessment Group decided to proceed with developing an Evidence Appraisal Report (EAR) and Guidance on one topic only - radiofrequency renal denervation for the treatment of resistant hypertension.

2022/23 NHS priorities and operational planning guidance in England

On April 12, 2022, NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSE/I) published 2022/23 priorities and operational planning guidance, including elective recovery planning supporting guidance, capital guidance for 2022-25, and revenue finance and contracting guidance. The 2022/23 priorities and operational planning guidance set out NHSE/I priorities for the year ahead and reconfirms the ongoing need to restore services, meet new care demands, and reduce the care backlogs that are a direct consequence of the pandemic.

Med Tech-related technology assessments and clinical guidelines from NICE in March 2022

In March 2022, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published five new Interventional Procedure Guidance (endoscopic balloon dilation for subglottic or tracheal stenosis, intramedullary distraction for lower limb lengthening, endoscopic full thickness removal of gastrointestinal stromal tumors of the stomach, percutaneous insertion of a cystic duct stent after cholecystostomy, and liposuction for chronic lipoedema), four new Medical Technologies Guidance (myCOPD, UroShield, Prontosan for wounds, and 3C Patch for diabetic foot ulcers), one new Diagnostic Guidance (terminated assessment of Freelite assays for multiple myeloma), and six new Medtech Innovation Briefings (Genedrive MT-RNR1 ID System, icobrain for multiple sclerosis, Al for analyzing chest X-ray images, and others). Also, three new clinical guidelines were published, and six were updated.

MedTech-related health technology assessments from NIHR in February 2022

In February 2022, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) in England released six MedTech-related reports in its Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Journal, which concerned biomarkers for assessing acute kidney injury, non-invasive testing for neovascular macular degeneration, decision support tool to prevent falls in older people, endometrial scratch, distal radius fracture, and test for group B Streptococcus. HTA Journal publishes research reports on the effectiveness, costs, and broader impact of health technologies for those who use, manage, and provide care in the NHS and informs National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance.

2022/23 National Tariff Payment System came into force on April 01, 2022 in England (National Health Service, NHS)

On March 31, 2022, NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSE/I) released the 2022/23 National Tariff Payment System (NTPS) to come into force on April 01, 2022. The aligned payment and incentive (API) model remains the central part of the 2022/23 NTPS, covering all secondary healthcare services, with few exceptions (e.g., diagnostic imaging, the contract value is lower than £30 million). National DRG (HRG) tariffs only remain for diagnostic imaging; other tariffs are published for benchmark purposes. Four new device categories were included, and two existing categories were updated to cover more devices in the 2022/23 High Cost Device List; In 2022/23, all High Cost devices are excluded from the fixed element and funded on a cost and volume basis.

Research demand signaling for the National Stroke Programme in England

On March 03, 2022, NHS England and NHS Improvement published a research demand signaling document for the National Stroke Programme. This document highlights the priority areas for research to inform national policy and support the NHS Long Term Plan targets. One of the high-priority areas is the technology for diagnosis, including artificial Intelligence solutions, innovative triage tools, technologies for the early and accurate diagnosis/detection of stroke.
