In a recent publication, Eidmann et al. assessed the carbon emissions from eight orthopedic surgical procedures in Germany, utilizing the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. Their analysis revealed procedure-specific footprints ranging from 53.5 kg CO2e for knee arthroscopy to 125.9 kg CO2e for revision knee arthroplasty, with most of the emissions arising from energy consumption (57.5%) and the supply chain (34.6%). The study emphasized that focused measures to optimize energy efficiency and decarbonize procurement could substantially mitigate the environmental impact of orthopaedic surgery.
