Screening

On September 5, 2022, it was announced that the Interterritorial Council for the Spanish National Health System (CISNS) approved the distribution of funds to the Autonomous Communities for the fight against cancer. The aim is to boost the screening programs for colorectal and cervical cancer.

On August 25, 2022, the Norwegian Directorate of Health announced the launch of the National screening program for colorectal cancer (Bowel screening program - Tarmscreeningprogrammet). All 55-year-old men and women will be included in the program and offered a test to identify invisible blood in the stool (fecal immunochemical test, FIT) every two years until the age of 65. Colonoscopy will be offered in case of positive FIT.

In June 2022, the National Board of Health and Welfare published the report "Towards a more coordinated cancer screening", which outlined measures taken to improve coordination in the area of cancer screening, and proposals for developing screening programs for early detection of cancer.

On May 13, 2022, the Innovation Committee at the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) published the decisions, in which they recommended the transfer to standard care for three completed projects. The projects relate to healthcare coordination, polypharmacy, and neonatal screening.

In May 2022, the National Institute for Health and Care Research in England released three MedTech-related reports in its Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Journal, which concerned colonoscopy surveillance following adenoma removal and transfer of thawed frozen embryo versus fresh embryo to improve the healthy baby rate in women undergoing IVF, and digital smartphone intervention for schizophrenia. HTA Journal publishes research reports on the effectiveness, costs, and broader impact of health technologies for those who use, manage, and provide care in the NHS and informs National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidance.

In Q1 of 2022, Health Technology Wales (HTW) published one MedTech-related guidance on transcranial magnetic stimulation in depression treatment. A total of eleven Topic Exploration Reports (TERs) were released in Q1. Based on the TERs conclusions, HTW's Assessment Group decided to proceed with developing an Evidence Appraisal Report (EAR) and Guidance on one topic only - radiofrequency renal denervation for the treatment of resistant hypertension.

On February 21, 2022, it was announced by the Ministry of Health that the public consultation regarding the Draft Order amending the Common Package of Benefits of the National Health System (SNS) was open. The amendments and clarifications are related to the fields of in-vitro diagnostics, ENT, pulmonary and airways, e-health, neurology, dental care, radiology, and enteral nutrition.

The Dutch Organization for Health Research and Development (ZonMw) will accept applications for subsidies under the "Early Detection" sub-program until March 8, 2022. This scheme is intended for upscaling screening programs or population screening.

In late September 2021, the Danish Health Authority (Sundhedsdatastyrelsen) has opened the application period for submitting proposals for new national screening programs in 2022. The deadline for the submission of the applications is December 1, 2021.

Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) develops national HTA guidelines to support decision-making in Ireland. In the third quarter of 2021, Health Information and Quality Authority published three reports in relation to in-vitro diagnostics, including newborn bloodspot screening, tests for hepatitis C and SARS-CoV-2.

In July 2021, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published one new Interventional Procedure Guidance (inducing and maintaining normothermia using temperature modulation devices to improve outcomes after stroke or subarachnoid hemorrhage) and four new Medtech Innovation Briefings (HealthVCF for detecting vertebral compression fractures on CT scans, trublood-prostate for triaging and diagnosing people with prostate cancer symptoms, AI technologies for detecting diabetic retinopathy, and Acumen IQ sensor for predicting hypotension risk).

The Galician Scientific and Technical Advice Unit in Spain (AVALIA-T) systematically evaluates healthcare technologies and provides decision-makers with critically reviewed information about their efficacy, safety, and effectiveness. Currently, the AVALIA-T is working on assessments of ventricular assist devices in pediatric patients with an indication for permanent destination therapy, bronchial thermoplasty for severe acute asthma, effectiveness and safety of epiduroscopy in the treatment of failed back surgery syndrome, and other topics.
