Laboratory Test Nomenclature updated in Finland
On November 28, 2024, the updated version of the Finnish Laboratory Tests Nomenclature was published by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) to come into force on January 1, 2025.
Laboratory Tests Nomenclature is intended to be a common classification between the physician responsible for the patient’s care and the unit performing laboratory tests used in healthcare services and information systems. The nomenclature harmonizes the practice of requesting and reporting laboratory tests and compiling statistics. The nationally uniform nomenclature also forms the basis for electronic data transfer and the utilization of patient data across organizational boundaries. The nomenclature covers laboratory studies in clinical chemistry, clinical physiology, clinical microbiology, clinical neurophysiology, genetics, and pathology. The Laboratory Tests Nomenclature is also used to code the tests in private settings with coverage from the national public payor (KELA).
Six new codes were introduced in the updated version. Some examples of newly introduced codes are provided below:
- 3814 F-Hemoglobin, human (qualitative), screening;
- 6817 Li-Immunoglobulin, light chains, Kappa, free;
- 6819 Pt-Gynecological smear and papillomavirus, nucleic acid, high risk (qualitative).
The letter before the code name means the following: F – feces, Li – cerebrospinal fluid, Pt – patient.
