Innovation funding

On September 1, 2023, the Institute for Hospital Remuneration Systems (INeK) announced the start of the application process for the innovation funding of the new examination and treatment methods (NUB) for 2024. The Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) reminds applying hospitals about minor changes in application requirements.

On September 19, 2023, the Innovative Devices Access Pathway (IDAP) pilot was launched. IDAP program aimed to accelerate the development of cost-effective medical devices and their integration into the UK market. The application window to join the pilot phase is now open to the UK and international commercial and non-commercial developers of innovative health technology. The deadline is October 29, 2023. Eight products will be selected for the pilot phase and receive non-financial support from a team of experts.

On September 12, 2023, an application window was opened to join the NHS Innovation Accelerator (NIA) program in 2024. NIA supports the development of individuals (‘Fellows’) and the spread of their innovation nationally. The deadline for applications is October 22, 2023.

In August 2023, NHS England announced the first technology (AposHealth) that will be supported by the MedTech Funding Mandate (MTFM) in 2023/24. MTFM supports NICE-approved, clinically effective, and cost-saving medical devices, diagnostics, and digital technologies, making it mandatory for commissioners and providers to implement them.

On June 30, 2023, the Innovation Committee at the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) published the decisions, recommending the transfer to standard care for two completed projects. The projects relate to the utilization of emergency care structures in Germany and implementation of patient guidelines for psychosocial therapies for patients with severe mental diseases.

On June 30, 2023, the Innovation Committee at the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) published the determined funding priorities for healthcare research projects (five topics) and clinical guidelines (four topics).

On June 7, 2023, the Innovation Committee at the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) published the overview of thirty-five newly funded healthcare research projects. These projects relate to the two funding announcements of June 27, 2022 (changed on September 20, 2022).

Director of MTRC Oleg Borisenko participated in the session “Innovative Payment Schemes (IPSs) in Europe: springboard for innovation?” at the Med Tech Forum in Dublin on the 31st of May 2023. The section was moderated by Rachele Busca (Director, HTA and Real-World Evidence, EMEACLA, Edwards Lifesciences) and panelists included Daniel Bamford (Deputy Director, Medtech and Digital, Innovation, Research and Life Sciences, NHS England) and Louisa Stüwe (Ministerial eHealth Delegation, Ministry of Health and Prevention, France). Oleg presented the summary of the report on innovative payment schemes for medical technologies, commissioned in 2022 by the European industry association Med Tech Europe to MTRC. We present a summary of the presentation.

On May 15, 2023, the Innovation Committee at the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) published the decisions, recommending the transfer to standard care for another three completed projects. The projects relate to controlling drug prescriptions in outpatient settings, evaluating the effectiveness of outpatient extensive stuttering therapy in primary school children, and the efficacy of cross-sectoral care models in psychiatry.

On April 5, 2023, the Innovation Committee at the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) announced the selection of thirty-five applications for Innovation Funding of healthcare research projects were accepted. A total of 231 applications were received in response to the funding announcement of June 27, 2022 (changed on September 20, 2022), and thirty-five of them were accepted.

On April 14, 2023, a repository of innovative acts outside the nomenclature of biology and anatomopathology (RIHN) and a Supplementary list of IVD tests were published. Minor changes were introduced in the 2023 RIHN list.

On April 5, 2023, the Innovation Committee at the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) announced the selection of thirteen applications for Innovation Funding for the development or further development of the clinical guidelines. A total of 31 applications were received in response to the funding announcement of June 27, 2022, and thirteen of them were accepted.
