Health Economic Publication Digest: Potential Impact of EQ-5D-5L Mapping Function Recently Recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence on Utility Values and Decision Making

In a recent publication, Maervoet et al. compared the newly recommended NICE Decision Support Unit (DSU) mapping function for EQ-5D-5L to EQ-5D-3L with the previously endorsed van Hout Crosswalk. An analysis of all 3,125 health states and synthetic patient simulations showed that the DSU approach produced higher utility values in 61% of cases, with an average difference of +0.062. The findings highlighted that mapping choice can shift utility estimates and may affect NICE decision-making.
