Applications for methodology development of the Appropriate Care framework program are now open in the Netherlands

The Appropriate Care Framework program (2024-2028) contributes to the movement towards appropriate care. The program stimulates knowledge development and research infrastructure so that decisions about which care is reimbursed under basic health insurance can be made based on value-driven care (care that is effective, relevant to the patient, and with optimal use of people, resources, and materials).

On December 9, 2025, the Dutch Organization for Health Research and Development (ZonMw) opened the submission of grant applications for the subsidy round “Methodology development for appropriate care” of the Appropriate Care Framework program. This round focuses on developing new methodologies, methodological concepts, theoretical approaches, and methodological principles. These form the foundation for future research and development in the field of appropriate care. Projects yield methodological knowledge, models, or frameworks that can be applied in later phases of research and development or (policy) decision-making.

Grant applications can be submitted by public or private legal entities established in the Netherlands. Furthermore, collaboration within the project is mandatory. This means that all parties necessary for implementation are represented in the project group. The subsidy round had a total of € 3,9 million available. The maximum budget that can be requested per application is €300,000 with a maximum duration of 24 months.

The deadline for submitting a detailed grant application is March 31, 2026. Submission of the pre-application form by January 29, 2026, is required.
