Expected reassessments of national clinical recommendations in Denmark

The Danish Health Authority (Sundhedsstyrelsen) has initiated a process of assessing the national clinical recommendations. National clinical recommendations address selected aspects of diagnostics, treatment, care and rehabilitation for specific patient groups, where special reason has been found to reveal the evidence. Work is set to start in 2024. Recommendations in diagnostic imaging, endoscopy, endocrine, ENT, gastrointestinal, nephrology and urology, neurology and neurosurgery, neuromodulation, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, pulmonary and airways, radiotherapy, spine, and some other fields are considered for reassessment.

Some examples of the recommendations considered for reassessment are provided below:

  • Anal incontinence in adults (2015, reassessed in 2017);
  • Bariatric surgery (2017);
  • Selected health professional interventions in rehabilitation for patients with type 2 diabetes (2014, reassessed in 2017);
  • Middle ear inflammation and treatment with eardrum drainage (2015, reassessed in 2017);
  • Urinary incontinence in women (2020);
  • Treatment of brain metastases (2018);
  • Investigation and treatment of epilepsy in children and adolescents (2014, reassessed in 2017);
  • Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) in benign disease (2015, reassessed in 2017);
  • Treatment of age-related cataracts (2020);
  • Treatment of patients with subacromial pain syndrome in the shoulder (2021);
  • Oxygen therapy for acutely ill adult patients (2020);
