Changes in the Danish Health Care Classification System in January 2023
In mid-December 2022, the Danish Health Data Agency (Sundhedsdatastyrelsen) published an update of the Health Care Classification System (Sundheds-væsenets Klassifikations System, SKS). The most significant changes include: 11 new diagnosis codes, 27 new procedure codes, and eight additional codes (Tillægskoder) were added. The newly added procedure codes mainly concern the obstetrics and gynecology, surgical procedures, endocrine, gastrointestinal, and radiology fields, and some other technology groups.
Some examples of the newly added procedure codes are listed below:
- KLFF01 “Placement of a Word catheter in Bartholin’s gland”;
- KTPJ05H “Core needle biopsy of axillary lymph node”;
- BBHF02A “Treatment with automatic insulin pump system (AID)”;
- ZZ0320 “Delivery of camera pill for bowel examination”;
- WDTPSFUXX “Tumor scan, F-18-mFBG”;
- BDDD64 “Remote hearing aid adjustment”;
- ZZV030A “COPD Assessment Test (CAT)”.
The Danish Health Data Agency updates the Health Care Classification System quarterly. It publishes the results on its website two weeks before the implementation, while the files with the changes are sent to the hospital systems.
The adjustments are subdivided into major and minor changes. Minor changes are mostly text updates, which do not change the meaning of the term and do not require code closure. The changes are considered major if associated with implementing a new code or code closure.
