New Nomenclature Articles introduced for orthopedic technologists in July 2025 in Belgium

Since July 1, 2025, the medical specialties "bandaging specialist" and "orthotist" have been restructured under the new title of "orthopedic technologist". To reflect this new professional designation, the National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance (INAMI/RIZIV) Nomenclature was updated on July 1, 2025.

The following Nomenclature Articles were repealed:

  • Article 27 “Bandaging specialists (bandages, belts, lumbar braces, post-mastectomy devices, insoles, portable urinal, appliances for artificial anus, tracheal cannula, equipment for cystic fibrosis)”;
  • Article 29 “Orthotists (orthopedic devices, prostheses, and orthopedic shoes)”.

Three new Articles were introduced with multiple codes with fees to reimburse the work of orthopedic technologists:

  • Article 27/1 “Orthopedic technologists in bandagery and orthotics”, which includes multiple codes for hernia and abdominal bandages, external breast prostheses, therapeutic elastic sleeves, gloves, and stockings, individual equipment for home administration of mucolytic agents in cases of cystic fibrosis, incontinence, and ostomy equipment, orthoses, compression garments;
  • Article 28/1 “Orthopedic technologists in prosthetics”, which includes multiple codes for various types of external prostheses of the upper and lower limbs;
  • Article 29/1 “Orthopedic technologists in footwear technology”, which includes multiple codes for custom-made orthopedic footwear.
