EU HTA Publication Digest: European Joint Clinical Assessment PICO Scoping Process: Analysis of Current Approaches and Recommendations

In a recent publication, D'Oca et al. analyzed current practices in the PICO scoping process used to define the scope of Joint Clinical Assessments under the EU HTA Regulation. Reviewing 14 publications covering 35 PICO exercises across 20 indications, the authors found that an average of 7 countries participated per exercise, resulting in around 8 consolidated PICOs per analysis. These figures reflect the limited number of published examples and participating countries, indicating that the current evidence base on PICO scoping in real-life JCA processes remains sparse. The findings emphasize the need for greater clarity in the PICO consolidation process to support transparent and efficient implementation of the EU HTA Regulation.
