Sustainability Publication Digest: The carbon footprint of cataract surgery pathways in England: an observational study using administrative data
MTRC shares the most relevant and impactful publications in the field of market access and HEOR for medical technologies in Europe through its Sustainability Publications Digest.
In a recent publication, van-Hove et al. analysed the carbon footprint of cataract surgery in England and the potential impact of adopting the NHS “Getting It Right First Time” (GIRFT) High Volume Low Complexity (HVLC) pathway. Using Hospital Episode Statistics data for all elective cataract procedures performed between April 2021 and March 2022, the authors found the average carbon footprint to be 100 kgCO₂e per surgery. Universal adoption of the GIRFT HVLC pathway could have saved an estimated 17.5 kilotons CO₂e. The study highlighted substantial practice variation even in a standardised pathway and the potential environmental benefits of pathway optimisation.
