Ongoing transition to integrated care in Belgium

The Belgian healthcare system is gradually moving from a disease-management approach to a more person-centered integrated care approach. Integrated care is defined as care in which health services are organized in such a way that individuals experience continuity of care within all of its services, in terms of health promotion, prevention, diagnostic, treatment, disease management, recovery, and palliative services.

To support the transition, the National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance (INAMI-RIZIV), in collaboration with FPS Public Health and an external consulting partner (WeCare), is developing a new inter-federal plan for integrated care. “Inter-federal” means that this plan is drawn up in close consultation and with the contribution of the federated entities.

On December 19, 2022, INAMI-RIZIV announced the extension of funding for integrated care pilot projects, which are currently being carried out for the next two years. Pilot projects are grouped into three main domains:

• Twelve pilot projects have been underway since 2018 to test the development and implementation of integrated care for chronically ill patients. For the remaining duration of the projects, a significant challenge will be to show the collective added value of integrated care;
• Nineteen projects for the elderly to test innovative alternative forms of care and support;
• Thirty-two projects in the mental health care area.
