Sustainability Publication Digest: Using Chronic Kidney Disease as a Model Framework to Estimate Healthcare-Related Environmental Impact

In a recent publication, Garcia Sanchez et al. developed a framework to quantify the environmental impacts of a disease care pathway, using chronic kidney disease (CKD) as a model. An analysis spanning ten countries found that kidney replacement therapies and hospitalisation at CKD stage 5 contribute most to carbon emissions, with patient transport identified as a key driver across all stages of care. The authors highlight that early diagnosis and proactive management of CKD could significantly improve outcomes while reducing the environmental footprint of healthcare.
