Sustainability Publication Digest: A Scoping Review of Interventions to Reduce the Environmental Footprint of Healthcare

In a recent publication, Seppänen et al. conducted a scoping review to map interventions that reduce the environmental footprint of healthcare across multiple settings. Drawing on 7 systematic reviews and 44 primary studies, the authors highlighted hospital-based interventions such as energy savings, reduced anesthetic gases, care protocol changes, and waste management as the most frequently reported. The review concluded that while effective local interventions exist, broader structural and systemic strategies remain underexplored.
