Sustainability Publication Digest: Perspectives on disposable and reusable surgical materials in laparoscopic surgery: a global survey amongst surgeons

MTRC shares the most relevant and impactful publications in the field of market access and HEOR for medical technologies in Europe through its Sustainability Publications Digest.

In a recent publication, Eussen et al. conducted a global survey on surgeons’ perspectives regarding disposable and reusable surgical materials in laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Responses from 594 surgeons across 75 countries showed strong support for reducing surgery’s environmental impact (82.3%), but fewer than half (48.7%) considered sustainability when selecting instruments. Limited access was the main barrier: only 52.3% had reusable trocars available, and fewer than 30% had access to reusable drapes and gowns, with Europe reporting particularly limited availability. The authors suggest that improving access, quality, and cost-effectiveness could help accelerate the shift toward more sustainable surgical practices.
