Sustainability Publication Digest: Ecological impact of anesthesia: Analysis of sevoflurane consumption as a greenhouse gas

In a recent publication, Scandurra et al. evaluated the ecological footprint of anesthesia by analyzing sevoflurane consumption and anesthesiologists’ awareness of its environmental impact across Belgium, France, and Italy. The study combined survey data from 152 clinicians with institutional consumption records, revealing that optimized use of sevoflurane could prevent emissions equivalent to 36.2 tons of CO₂ and save over €530,000 across eight years. Authors emphasized the need for education and awareness initiatives to promote sustainable anesthesia practices.
