Updates in the coverage of medical services in Switzerland in 2024

On November 29, 2023, the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health published the changes that will occur to the Services Ordinance (KLV/OPre), which determines coverage of medical services in Switzerland. The updates will enter into force on January 1 or July 1, 2024, and they relate to the list of explicitly evaluated services (Annex 1 of KLV/OPre), outpatient-before-hospital services (Annex 1a), List of Tools and Equipment (Annex 2), and List of Analyses (Annex 3).

2024 Swedish procedure coding system (KVÅ) released

In October 2023, the annual update of the Swedish procedure coding system (Classification of Health Care Measures, KVÅ) was released to come into force on January 1, 2024. A total of 70 new surgical procedure codes and 17 new medical procedure codes were introduced concerning endoscopy, ENT, men’s health, nephrology and urology, peripheral vascular, and spine.

The HTA body of the Tuscany Regional Healthcare issues three types of documents: full HTA reports, rapid HTA reports, and motivational forms. With regional decree 11957 of June 07, 2023, Tuscany Regional Healthcare has published assessments of two medical devices in the cardiovascular and spine areas.

MedTech-related health technology assessments from NIHR in November 2021

In November 2021, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) in England released three MedTech-related reports in its Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Journal, which concerned delivery for preterm birth, thoracolumbar fracture, and knee replacement. HTA Journal publishes research reports on the effectiveness, costs, and broader impact of health technologies for those who use, manage, and provide care in the NHS and informs National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance.

MTRC has released European reimbursement report for the use of treatment methods of scoliosis in 11 EU countries

The report presents a summary of the reimbursement situation for the use of treatment methods of scoliosis in Europe. The following procedures are considered under the scope of analysis: insertion of the spinal (growing) rod system, anterior or posterior interbody fusion in the spine with or without vertebra resection, sacroiliac joint fusion surgery. The analysis covers procedure coding, payment mechanism, reimbursement tariffs and policy restrictions in 11 EU countries including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. It is also possible to add analysis in the Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, Romania, Russia and Turkey.
