Med Tech-related health technology assessments from NIHR in October 2024

In October 2024, the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) in England released seven Med Tech-related assessments in its HTA Journal, which concerned the Genedrive kit, timing of stoma closure in neonates, interventions in perceptual disorders after stroke, revascularisation strategy for chronic limb ischemia, MRI software and cognitive fusion biopsies in prostate cancer, transperineal prostate biopsy devices, and ultraviolet therapy in severe eczema. HTA Journal publishes research reports on the effectiveness, costs, and broader impact of health technologies for those who use, manage, and provide care in the NHS and informs NICE guidance.

Guidance for planning, designing, and implementing community diagnostic centers in England

On September 2, 2024, NHS England published guidance for planning, designing, and implementing Community diagnostic centers (CDCs). The national CDC Program is in its third year and has approved 170 CDC sites across England. The guidance sets the next steps and best practices in developing CDCs, including minimum requirements for core diagnostic tests that CDCs must provide permanently.

Med Tech-related health technology assessments from NIHR in August 2024

In August 2024, the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) in England released eight MedTech-related assessments in its Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Journal, which concerned automated devices for identifying peripheral arterial disease, left ventricular assist devices as destination therapy, cerclage suture type to prevent pregnancy loss, gynecological cancer surveillance in Lynch syndrome, multiparametric MRI in bladder cancer pathway, in-home monitoring for people with glaucoma, real-time ultrasound elastography of thyroid nodules, and AI-based software for analyzing chest X-ray images. HTA Journal publishes research reports on the effectiveness, costs, and broader impact of health technologies for those who use, manage, and provide care in the NHS and informs National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance.

A regular update of the Danish SKS coding system came into force in April 2024

The Danish Health Data Authority (Sundheddatastyrelsen) quarterly updates the Health Care Classification System (Sundhedsvæsenets Klassifikations System, SKS). The updated version was published in mid-March 2024 to come into force on April 1, 2024. Nine new medical procedure codes, five new codes for diagnostic investigations, and ten new additional codes concerning cardiovascular, ENT, interventional radiology, pulmonary, endoscopy, pathology, and surgical procedures were introduced.

The final version of the 2024 OPS procedure coding classification released in Germany

On October 26, 2023, the BfArM (Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices) published the final version of the 2024 OPS procedure coding classification. The OPS, together with the ICD-10-GM (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision, German Modification), forms the basis for the reimbursement systems in outpatient and inpatient care in Germany.

The preliminary version of the 2024 OPS procedure coding classification released in Germany

On August 11, 2024, the BfArM (Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices) published the preliminary version of the 2024 OPS procedure coding classification. The OPS, together with the ICD-10-GM (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision, German Modification), forms the basis for the reimbursement systems in inpatient and outpatient care in Germany.

MedTech-related technology assessments and clinical guidelines from NICE in January 2023

In January 2023, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published four new Interventional Procedure Guidance (percutaneous image-guided cryoablation of peripheral neuroma, laparoscopic insertion of a magnetic ring, transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the trigeminal nerve, and trabeculectomy with a biodegradable collagen matrix implant ), two new Diagnostic Guidance (devices for remote monitoring of Parkinson's disease, MRI-based technologies for assessing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease), and three new Medtech Innovation Briefings (PredictSURE IBD, Ambu aScope 4 Broncho, and Aquablation robotic therapy). One MedTech-related clinical guideline was updated.

New procedure codes introduced in July 2022 in Finland

In the first half of July 2022, 13 new procedure codes were introduced by the Code Service of the Finnish National Health and Wellbeing Institution (THL). The introduced codes are dedicated to diagnostic imaging, surgical procedures, radiology, and some other fields.

Changes in the Danish Health Care Classification System in October 2021

In late September 2021, the Danish Health Data Agency (Sundhedsstyrelsen) has published the update of the Health Care Classification System (Sundheds-væsenets Klassifikations System, SKS). The most significant changes include: 31 new diagnosis codes and 14 procedure codes were added. The newly added procedure codes concern mainly pulmonary and airways area and neuromodulation procedures.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is currently developing health technology assessments concerning eHealth technologies in its Medical Technologies Guidance, Diagnostic Guidance, and Medtech Innovation Briefing programs. As of late April 2021, there are thirteen ongoing assessments.
