January 2026 Med Tech-related health technology assessments from the NIHR in England
The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) funds valuable independent research for health and social care decision-makers in England. Reports from the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme are published in the NIHR HTA Journal and inform the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance.
In January 2026, three Med Tech-related assessments were published in the NIHR HTA Journal, including the following:
- Digitally enabled therapy for chronic tic disorders and Tourette Syndrome based on a systematic review and economic evaluation. The study aimed to evaluate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of two digital technologies, Online Remote Behavioural Treatment for Tics (by Mindtech) and Neupulse (by Neurotherapeutics), and identify evidence gaps for future research. It was concluded that both technologies appear to significantly reduce Yale Global Tic Severity Scale – Total Tic Severity Score, but there were no improvements in the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale-Impairment scores and mixed results across other secondary outcomes, meaning it is unclear to what extent improvements in tic severity scores can translate to improvements in quality of life. Cost-effectiveness estimates were highly uncertain due to a lack of long-term evidence.
- Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding or sleeve gastrectomy for severe obesity based on the By-Band-Sleeve randomized controlled trial. The study aimed to compare the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding, and sleeve gastrectomy for people living with severe obesity. It was concluded that Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy are more effective than adjustable gastric banding. Sleeve gastrectomy has inferior excess weight loss and a lower mean quality-of-life score than Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
Another assessment, published in January 2026, focused on the clinical and cost-effectiveness of laparoscopic surgery versus optimized medical treatment for the management of deep endometriosis.
