The G-BA Innovation Committee published an overview of thirty-five newly funded healthcare research projects in Germany

On June 7, 2023, the Innovation Committee at the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) published the overview of thirty-five newly funded healthcare research projects. These projects relate to the two funding announcements of June 27, 2022 (changed on September 20, 2022).

The thirty-five applications that were accepted concerned the following topics:

• Health in climate change: 7;
• Digitization and networking of quality-assured guideline knowledge and further development of the methodology: 2;
• Health services research to improve the situation of affected people in the provision of medical aids: 3;
• Improving specialist medical and dental care in inpatient healthcare facilities: 1;
• Prerequisites for the development and requirements for the implementation of eHealth in patient care: 7;
• Health services research on aftercare and discharge management: 6;
• Drug therapy: implications of switching from best supportive care or off-label use to indication-specific drugs: 2;
• Open topic: 7.

Overview of the examples of the funded projects are provided below:

• The goal of the project "Digital skills and development of digital tools for inpatient and outpatient care" (HowToDIGITAL), the applicant: Georg-August-University Göttingen, is a scientific evaluation of technical development processes involving service providers in care and addressing digital skills to increase acceptance, reduce user resistance and increase digital networking. Accordingly, HowToDIGITAL is expected to provide the analysis of digital skills from the user perspective and the analysis of user-centric development processes from the technology perspective;
• The project "Benefits and acceptance of digital health: international experiences, options for action and patient preferences" (NADI), the applicant: Hannover Medical University, aims to understand both the international experiences with the implementation of digital health offers in patient care and acceptance factors, both from the patient perspective and from the perspective of the service provider, and accordingly to define the action strategies for the use of digital health in the German healthcare system;
• The project "Provision of medical aids and therapy in male stress incontinence" (ProKontinenz), the applicant: Technical University Dresden, aims to develop an online information service on providing medical aids and therapy in male stress incontinence. It is expected that ProKontinenz will support the patients in optimizing their provision of aids to improve their quality of life. Furthermore, more patients are expected to seek incontinence surgery, thereby increasing their quality of life and significantly reducing the use of medical aids.
