Assessment of the new techniques of bariatric surgery in France

On October 15, 2020, the French National Authority for Health (HAS) published the synthesis “New techniques of bariatric surgery: identification, the status of advancement and opportunities to evaluate,” in which they outlined three techniques currently diffusing in France (SADI-Sleeve, Endosleeve, and Sleeve Gastrectomy with Transit Bipartition). All three methods are the subject of ongoing clinical studies, and the evaluation will be initiated at the end of these studies.

In the synthesis, the HAS identified seventeen techniques of bariatric surgery recently developed in the world (they are listed in the report). Among these techniques, three are in the process of diffusion in France - Single-Anastomosis Duodeno Ileal bypass with Sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-Sleeve), Sleeve Gastrectomy with Transit Bipartition, and Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (Endosleeve).

These techniques are subjects of clinical studies in many countries, including France. The French study for SADI-Sleeve is carried out as a part of coverage with evidence development program PHRC (named “SADISLEEVE”). The end of the study is planned for the end of 2023.

Sleeve Gastrectomy with Transit Bipartition is also studied under the PHRC program since 2019 (named “BIPASS”). The end of the study was initially scheduled for 44 months after the start of patient recruitment.

The Endosleeve technique was also a subject of the PHRC project application in 2019 but was not selected. The new request will be underway this year.

Currently, bariatric surgery techniques are not covered by social insurance in France. The evaluation of these techniques will be initiated after the competition of the relevant clinical studies.
