Updates in the coverage of medical services in Switzerland in 2025
On June 10, 2025, the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health published the changes that will occur to the Healthcare Benefit Ordinance (KLV/OPre), which determines coverage of medical services in Switzerland. The updates will enter into force on July 1, 2025.
Among the most significant updates is the expansion of colorectal cancer screening, now covering individuals aged 50–74 (previously 50–69) and increasing reimbursed colonoscopies from two to three per screening period. Other minor changes relate to prophylactic vaccinations, measures for fall prevention in seniors, neuropsychology therapy and examination, and other medical services.
Several changes were made in Annex 1 of the KLV/OPre (List of explicitly evaluated services), including granting permanent coverage for regional deep hyperthermia combined with perioperative chemotherapy for soft tissue sarcomas and Coverage with Evidence Development (CED) for one device in the men’s health field.
Changes in Annex 2 of the KLV/OPre (List of Tools and Equipment, MiGeL) include administrative simplification for chronically ill patients, who will no longer need to submit annual proof of the medical necessity for reimbursed aids, and the creation of several new reimbursement categories for medical aids intended for patients with stoma/short bowel syndrome and congenital metabolic disorders.
Annex 3 of the Healthcare Benefit Ordinance (List of Analyses) sees minor adjustments, including a temporary price increase for one test. No new tests will be introduced.
No changes in Annex 1a of the Healthcare Benefit Ordinance (outpatient-before-hospital services) were announced.
