In September 2022, the Dutch Healthcare Institute (Zorginstituut Nederland, ZIN) announced three projects which were awarded a total amount of €5.3 million under round 5 of the subsidy scheme for Promising care in 2022:

  • Research into PET/CT scan instead of CT scan for post-screening in lung cancer;
  • Promising treatment for head and neck cancer that spares lymph nodes in the neck;
  • New research on surgery to prevent lymphedema after cancer treatment

The research into PET/CT scan instead of CT scan for people who have already been treated for stage III lung cancer and are starting additional immunotherapy or aftercare was awarded a subsidy of €2.5 million within the framework of the "Subsidy scheme for promising care". The project will start in April 2023. It will be supervised by the Radboud UMC in Nijmegen and last for six years. After completing the project, the research results will be submitted to the ZIN around April 2029 for the decision about inclusion in the Basic Health Insurance. The publication of the ZIN position on reimbursement under the Basic Insurance Package is scheduled for October 2029.
