PET scan usefulness in non-oncological indications assessed by Spanish AETSA
In September 2019, the Andalusian Health Technology Assessment Department (AETSA) published an assessment report on the evaluation of PET scan usefulness in non-oncological indications in Spain.
The aim of this work was to structure the information related to the utility or diagnostic performance of different radiopharmaceuticals that are used in the PET for non-oncological indications established in its technical sheet. The report is based on a structured literature search with a subsequent qualitative and quantitative synthesis of obtained data. All the considered studies were grouped according to their design.
The following conclusions were provided by AETSA:
- Systematic reviews with or without meta-analysis have been found for 10 of the 15 indications analyzed
- The quality of systematic reviews has generally been low and, in some cases, moderate. The high-quality reviews, which conclude that routine use cannot be recommended, were found only for the indication of cognitive impairment with suspected Alzheimer's disease
- Based on the localized information, AETSA suggested the preparation of an evaluation report for PET 18F-FDG in severe left ventricular insufficiency and the update of the systematic reviews for PET 18F-FDG in sarcoidosis and in refractory partial temporal epilepsy
