Med Tech-related technology assessments and clinical guidelines from NICE in February 2022

In February 2022, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published two new Interventional Procedure Guidance (stereotactic radiosurgery for trigeminal neuralgia, and microwave ablation for primary or metastatic cancer in the lung), two new Diagnostic Guidance (EarlyCDT Lung for assessing the risk of lung cancer in solid lung nodules, PredictSURE IBD and IBDX to guide treatment of Crohn's disease), and four new Medtech Innovation Briefings (Insides System for managing intestinal failure, d-Nav insulin management app for type 2 diabetes, GaitSmart for personalized exercise rehabilitation, AposHealth for knee osteoarthritis)

Three more health apps obtained reimbursement in Germany

In early October 2021, three more health apps were introduced in the Directory of digital health applications (DiGAs) at the Federal Office for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) and thus became reimbursable. These apps can be prescribed by physicians and psychotherapists and will be reimbursed by health insurers. In total, 23 health apps are now available at the DiGA Directory.

Med Tech-related technology assessments and clinical guidelines from NICE in August 2021

In August 2021, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published three new Interventional Procedure Guidance (magnetic resonance therapy for knee osteoarthritis, laparoscopic removal of uterine fibroids with power morcellation, hysteroscopic mechanical tissue removal for uterine fibroids), and six new Medtech Innovation Briefings (PLASMA system with button electrode, Immunoscore, MMprofiler, Patient Status Engine, lung texture analysis, Colli-Pee). Also, five clinical guidelines were published.

Autologous chondrocyte implantation in the knee assessed by IQWiG in Germany

On behalf of the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA), the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) investigated to what extent adults with symptomatic knee cartilage defect (but without advanced arthrosis) could benefit from autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) of different types: periosteal-covered (ACI-P), collagen-covered (ACI-C) or matrix-associated (M-ACI).

MTRC has released European reimbursement report for arthroscopic procedures on the knee joint in 11 EU countries

The report presents a summary of the reimbursement situation for diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures on the knee joint in osteoarthrosis in Europe. The following procedures are considered: a diagnostic endoscopic examination of knee joint with or without biopsy; endoscopic removal of a loose body from knee joint; endoscopic lavage of knee joint. The analysis covers procedure coding, payment mechanism, reimbursement tariffs and policy restrictions in 11 EU countries including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. It is also possible to add analysis in the Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, Romania, Russia and Turkey.

Effectiveness of treatment for knee osteoarthritis assessed in Norway

In July 2019, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) has released a report for the effectiveness of treatment for knee osteoarthritis to summarize key findings from systematic reviews about relevant treatment options to ease the symptoms in patients with arthritis in the knee. It was outlined that self-management education program and physical aids give little or no difference in pain, whereas noncompartmental knee arthroplasty is superior to total knee arthroplasty in pain.

Med Tech-related technology assessments and clinical guidelines from NICE in January 2019

In January 2019, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published six new interventional procedure guidance, three medical technologies guidance, and three new MedTech innovation briefings for liver function capacity test, a functional electrical stimulation (FES) integrated cycling system used to start muscle contraction to stimulate trunk and limb muscles in people with spinal cord injury, laser shoe attachment used as a walking aid and is designed to help prevent freezing of gait in people with Parkinson's disease.
