Optical coherence tomography (OCT)

In February 2022, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) in England released six MedTech-related reports in its Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Journal, which concerned biomarkers for assessing acute kidney injury, non-invasive testing for neovascular macular degeneration, decision support tool to prevent falls in older people, endometrial scratch, distal radius fracture, and test for group B Streptococcus. HTA Journal publishes research reports on the effectiveness, costs, and broader impact of health technologies for those who use, manage, and provide care in the NHS and informs National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance.

On January 20, 2022, the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) launched a consultation on the latest set of guidance (List 3) of the Evidence-based Interventions (EBI) Programme. EBI program develops guidance sets (Lists) for tests, treatments, and procedures based on recommendations from the Expert Advisory Committee and NICE assessments. Proposed List 3 covers 17 interventions across a range of medical specialties, including cardiology, ophthalmology, urology, and others. The deadline for comments submission is March 31, 2022.

At the beginning of September 2021, the Government of the Russian Federation released the preliminary version of the Program of State Guarantees for the period of 2022-2024. Major changes concerned the High-End Medical Care (HEMC) list I, where two new procedures in the cardiovascular and neurovascular field were added. The HEMC list II was expanded with the procedures in the field of radiotherapy, neurology, and neurosurgery, surgical procedures. The final version is expected at the beginning of 2022.

HTA Journal publishes research reports on the effectiveness, costs, and broader impact of health technologies for those who use, manage, and provide care in the NHS, and informs National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance.

The Agency for Health Technology Assessment of Andalusia Autonomous Community in Spain (AETSA) systematically evaluates healthcare technologies and provides decision-makers with critically review information about their efficacy, safety, and effectiveness. Currently, the AETSA is working on assessments of laser-induced heat therapy in epilepsy surgery, stereotactic radiation therapy for the treatment of refractory ventricular tachycardia, implantable Holter monitor with ILink Online technology for prolonged cardiac monitoring, and other topics.

Reimbursement of optical coherence tomography (OCT) for diagnosis and therapy control in retinal diseases will be available from October 2019 via the EBM (Einheitlicher Bewertungsmaβstab, German Uniform Evaluation Standard).

On the Interterritorial Council that took place March 4th, 2019, the Working Plan for the Spanish Network for Health Technology Assessment was agreed and published. The working plan includes 22 health technology assessment reports, 7 monitoring studies, 9 clinical practice guidelines, and 1 evidence-based product.

At the end of December 2018, the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) decided that optical coherence tomography for the diagnosis and therapy control of several retinal diseases will be covered by the statutory health insurance.
