HTA for robot-assisted percutaneous coronary intervention in Norway 2021

In August 2021, the mini-HTA evaluation of the robot-assisted percutaneous coronary intervention was released. The method was described as safe and effective. After the introduction into the clinical practice, the method should be followed up for two years with a sufficient number of procedures to understand the real benefit. All procedures are to be registered in the Norwegian Registry for Invasive Cardiology.

Rapid HTA of PD-L1 assays in urothelial carcinoma published in Norway

On August 17, 2021, the National Institute of Public Health released a rapid HTA report on the evaluation of PD-L1 assays in urothelial carcinoma commissioned by the Ordering Forum. This assessment does not provide any conclusions on the effectiveness of various treatment strategies in the treatment of urothelial carcinoma in adults.

Two methods received positive coverage decisions in Norway

On August 30, 2021, the Decision Forum for "New Methods" made a positive coverage decision for two methods: Transurethral Microwave Thermotherapy (TUMT) for benign prostatic hyperplasia treatment and organ donation using normothermic regional perfusion in patients with severe brain injury and who died of cardiac and respiratory arrest when life-prolonging treatment is discontinued.

Ongoing HTAs of in-vitro diagnostic tests in Norway

In 2013, Norway established a framework, “New Method,” for the introduction of innovations into the health care system through either a national or hospital-based health technology assessment. In this framework, all innovations should undergo HTA before being funded. As of June 7, 2021, five HTAs of in-vitro diagnostics are in progress.

Update of the Norwegian Laboratory Code System released

On March 23, 2021, the Norwegian Directorate of e-Health released an updated version of the National Laboratory code (NLK) system and associated tariffs for state and private laboratories to be implemented not later than May 01, 2021. NLK system is used for activity-based reimbursement by the Norwegian Health Economics Administration (Helfo) in outpatient settings since 2018.Thirty-four new codes were added in medical biochemistry and medical microbiology areas.

Five new Med Tech mini-HTAs initiated in Norway in March 2021

In March 2021, the new mini-HTAs of five technologies were initiated in Norway: Harpoon - transapical neochordae device, tricuspidal clip, portable hand-held spirometry, CGM device and insulin pump, and portable spirometry device. The final mini-method assessment will be published in the National Database for Mini-HTA.

2021 Norwegian Laboratory Code System updates released

On January 25, 2021, the Norwegian Directorate of e-Health released a regular update of the Norwegian Laboratory code (NLK) system (version 7280.54) and associated tariffs for state and private laboratories to be implemented not later than March 01, 2021. In this update, 63 new codes were introduced. On February 02, 2021, an extra update was issued (version 7280.55) to be implemented not later than April 01, 2021. Five new codes for the analyses of mutated SARS-CoV-2 were introduced in this update.

Ongoing mini-HTAs of medical technologies in Norway initiated in the second half of 2020

In 2013, Norway established a framework “New Method” for the introduction of innovations into the health care system through either a national or hospital-based health technology assessment. In this framework, all innovations should undergo HTA before being funded. In the second half of 2020, eight new mini-HTA projects of medical technologies were launched in Norway: tissue allotransplantation, pain treatment via neuromodulation, among others.

Norwegian Directorate of e-Health released a new version of the National Laboratory Code System

In late November 2020, the Norwegian Directorate of e-Health released an updated version of the National Laboratory code (NLK) system and associated tariffs that will be implemented not later than January 01, 2021. A total of 25 new codes were added in this version of NLK, 201 codes have been changed, and eight codes were inactivated. Six new codes for SARS-related coronavirus antigen and six new codes for SARS-CoV-2 antigen have been established.
