Nordic cooperation for sustainable procurement of medical equipment

In January 2025, the Nordic Initiative for Environmental Labelling of Medical Supplies (NIELS) project reached its completion. The project began in 2022 as part of the Nordic Innovation and Supplier Development Program (LUP), with the goal of encouraging more sustainable procurement of medical equipment through the broader application of eco-labeling.

Several Nordic procurement organizations were involved in the project, including the Hospital Procurement Health Authority (Norway), the Regions' Joint Procurement (Denmark), the Collaboration of regions for sustainable public procurement (Sweden), Helsinki University Hospital (Finland), Nordic eco-label Swan, and Nordic industry organization Melanor.

The project focused on exploring how third-party environmental labeling - specifically Type-1 eco-labels certified by independent bodies - can support sustainable procurement practices. By utilizing certified products, the aim was to simplify decision-making for public purchasers, reduce administrative burdens, and streamline documentation and evaluation processes, ultimately saving time and resources for both suppliers and buyers.

The discussions engaged over 180 participants from across the Nordics and Europe, reflecting growing interest from both procurement bodies and industry players in advancing collaboration and expanding eco-labeling efforts for medical products.

Following its successful conclusion, the project is now considering opportunities to broaden the dialogue and initiatives to a European level.
