Med Tech-related technology assessments and clinical guidelines from NICE in February 2020

In February 2020, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published one new diagnostics guidance (for SepsiTest assay for rapidly identifying bloodstream bacteria and fungi), one new medical technologies guidance (for Episcissors-60 for mediolateral episiotomy) and two Medtech innovation briefings (for Plus Sutures for preventing surgical site infection and National Early Warning Score systems that alert to deteriorating adult patients in hospital).

In February 2019, NICE published one new Diagnostics Guidance for SepsiTest assay for rapidly identifying bloodstream bacteria and fungi, which provides evidence-based recommendations on the SepsiTest assay.  There is currently insufficient evidence to recommend the routine adoption in the NHS of the SepsiTest assay for rapidly identifying bloodstream bacteria and fungi. The test shows promise, and further research to provide robust evidence is encouraged, particularly to demonstrate the value of using the test results in clinical decision‑making.

Medical technologies guidance evaluates new, innovative medical devices, and diagnostics. It looks at medical technologies that deliver treatment, like those implanted during surgical procedures, give greater independence to patients or detect or monitor medical conditions.

In February, NICE published one new Medical Technologies Guidance Episcissors-60 for mediolateral episiotomy covers evidence-based recommendations on Episcissors-60 for mediolateral episiotomy. Episcissors‑60 show promise for mediolateral episiotomy. But there is currently not enough evidence to support the case for routine adoption in the NHS. Research is recommended to address uncertainties about the efficacy and safety of using Episcissors‑60.

MedTech Innovation Briefing is the NICE's advice program for innovative technologies. It provides an overview of clinical effectiveness, safety, and cost. It does not offer formal guidance, and it, therefore, does not provide any recommendations

Two new Medtech Innovation Briefings for Plus Sutures for preventing surgical site infection (for wound closure in adults and children after surgical procedures) and  National Early Warning Score systems that alert to deteriorating adult patients in hospital (integrated software systems that output the national early warning score for adult patients in hospital) have been published in February.
