Cerenkov luminescence image projection system for cancer assessed by Spanish AQuAS
In October 2019, the Agency for Health Quality and Assessment of Catalonia (AQuAS) published an assessment report on Cerenkov luminescence image projection system for intraoperative evaluation of surgical margins in breast, prostate and gastrointestinal cancer in Spain.
This work aimed to conduct a literature search and evaluate the efficacy, effectiveness, and safety of the Cerenkov luminescence image system to delimit the tumor edges in an intra-surgical manner.
The following conclusions were provided by AQuAS:
- One of the aspects to consider is a measurement of the safety due to the radiation received during the procedure. The introduction of new technology involves making changes at an organizational and/or structural level
- This new technology is expected to get an improvement in the effectiveness of oncological surgery and a reduction in costs. It would be as a consequence of decreasing the number of operations due to recurrences or post-surgical treatments or due to insufficient surgical excision
- In February 2018 the results of a clinical trial were expected to supply with reliable data on efficacy, within a clinical studies program that is scheduled to be completed in 4 years
- Therefore, the final results of this study should be available before knowing if the use of this new emerging technology could cause relevant changes in the management of very severe diseases
