Reimbursement summary for angioplasty of arteries of lower extremities

This post presents an extract from our reimbursement analysis for angioplasty of arteries lower extremities using plain and drug-coated balloons (DCBs) for peripheral artery disease in England, France and Germany. Plain balloon angioplasty is reimbursement via DRG solely and DCBs are reimbursement via combination of DRG and add-on reimbursement.

Assessments of six medical devices published in Tuscany

The HTA body of the Tuscany Regional Healthcare issues two types of documents: HTA forms and motivational forms. With a regional decree 6189 of April 23, 2019, Tuscany Regional Healthcare has published assessments of six (6) medical devices of various therapeutic areas. Tuscany Regional Healthcare has published 17 other evaluations of medical devices earlier this year.

Below is the list of technologies that have been assessed:

  • CardioMEMS HF - Wireless system for monitoring heart failure (Abbott)
  • CENTERA - Transcatheter Heart Valve System (Edwards Lifesciences)
  • InnFocus Microshunt - Glaucoma drainage system (InnFocus)
  • Iodine-125 QuickLink - Permanent implant of I-125 granules (Bard)
  • NeoChord DS1000™ System – System for mitral valve regurgitation (NeoChord)
  • Coronary Shockwave - Intravascular lithotripsy system (Shockwave Medical)

Designation of Benchmark centers of the Spanish National Health System in October 2024

In October 2024, the Agreements on new pathologies and procedures for the care of which it is necessary to designate Benchmark centers, departments, and units of the National Health System (CSURs) were approved in the cardiovascular, endoscopy, gastrointestinal, nephrology, and urology, obstetrics and gynecology, surgical procedures, neuromodulation, and peripheral vascular fields. In addition, several CSURs were designated or redesignated for previously approved pathologies and procedures.

The final version of the 2025 OPS procedure coding classification released in Germany

On October 24, 2024, the BfArM (Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices) published the final version of the 2025 OPS procedure coding classification. The OPS, together with the ICD-10-GM (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision, German Modification), forms the basis for the reimbursement systems in outpatient and inpatient care in Germany. Multiple new procedure codes were introduced in several fields, including cardiovascular, endoscopic, peripheral vascular, and robotic surgery.

Rapid HTAs of two medical devices released in Tuscany

The HTA body of the Tuscany Regional Healthcare issues three types of documents: full HTA reports, rapid HTA reports, and motivational forms. With regional decree 20315 of September 9, 2024, Tuscany Regional Healthcare published two new rapid HTA reports of medical devices in the orthopedics and surgical procedures areas.

HTA submissions for robotic surgery open in Italy

On August 7, 2024, the National Agency for Regional Health Services (AGENAS) announced a call for applications for Health Technology Assessment (HTA) for robotic surgery systems with intended use in the following surgical specialties: general surgery, gynecology and obstetrics, and urology, as part of the 2023-2025 National Health Technology Assessment Program for Medical Devices.
