2023-2028 strategy for “New Methods” framework published in Norway

Norway has a national system for the introduction of new health technologies within the specialist health service (“New Methods” framework) through either a national or hospital-based health technology assessment. This framework is mandatory for all innovations before being funded.

In August 2023, the 2023-2028 strategy for the “New Methods” framework development was published. The strategy defines the most important objectives for further improvement over the next five years. The six key strategic goals include the following:

  • Better handling of medical devices and procedures within the “New Method” framework. Further planned actions to achieve this goal include developing appropriate processes and prioritization criteria for medical devices and procedures;
  • Shorten the timelines while maintaining good quality;
  • Strengthen participation from user representatives and specialist healthcare professionals;
  • Contribute to implementation in clinical practice by updating national professional guidelines and action programs from the Directorate of Health.
