Carotid endarterectomy

In late February 2025, the Innovation Committee at the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) published the decision recommending the transfer to standard care for the completed project in the peripheral vascular field. The project was dedicated to the integration and spatial analysis of regional, site-specific, and patient-specific factors to improve the quality of care in carotid artery revascularization.

On April 28, 2022, the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa) published the first release of the DRG package for 2023 (RZ23a). Nine new DRGs for carotid endarterectomy and aortic surgery with or without neuromonitoring and five supplementary payments for remote monitoring in cardiovascular diseases will be implemented.

The report presents a summary of the reimbursement situation for carotid endarterectomy in Europe. The following procedures will be considered in the report: surgical carotid endarterectomy, percutaneous transluminal carotid artery angioplasty and stenting. The analysis covers procedure coding, payment mechanism, reimbursement tariffs and policy restrictions in 11 EU countries including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.
