The Danish National Board of Health's has initiated revision of recommendations for cervical cancer screening

In recent years, extensive new knowledge of new screening methods has been gained, including the beneficial effect and possible disadvantages of using HPV testing in cervical cancer screening. At the same time, attention has been focused on participation in the screening program, via Cancer Plan IV. Against this background, the Danish National Board of Health (Sundhedsstyrelsen) has launched an update of the recommendations for cervical cancer screening.

Traditionally, cervical cancer screening has been performed by microscopic examination of cervical cells (so-called cytology study), but after confirmation of the association between cervical cancer and HPV infection, new methods for detection of HPV have been implemented. Several countries have already included HPV tests in their screening programs for selected age groups. Therefore, in Denmark, there is great interest in the application of HPV testing in cervical screening programs. Developing new recommendations, the working group, among other things,  has reviewed the possibility of using HPV testing as the primary screening method in the future.

The Danish National Board of Health has opened a consultation on the revision of recommendations for cervical cancer screening. The deadline for hearing is 16 January 2018.
