National Cancer Framework Program 2026-2035 presented in Austria

On January 30, 2026, the Federal Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection (BMASGPK) and Gesundheit Österreich GmbH (GÖG) jointly presented the National Cancer Framework Program 2026-2035. It serves as a strategic compass, setting the direction for cancer control and care in Austria over the next ten years, although it is not legally binding. The Program comprises four areas of action, 22 objectives, and 113 measures.

The most important milestones of the Program include the following:

  • Evidence-based and quality-assured screening and early detection programs are to be expanded further, initially focusing on colorectal cancer. Pilot projects have already been carried out in Styria and Vienna. Subsequently, based on recommendations from the National Screening Committee, new screening programs are to be piloted, e.g., for the early detection of prostate and lung cancer;
  • The Program provides for the expansion of multiprofessional teams, as well as the development of coordination and navigation functions for patients, offering guidance and support throughout the entire care pathway.
