First reimbursement category for health apps announced in Switzerland
On December 3, 2025, the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health announced the update of Annex 2 of the Health Care Benefit Ordinance (KLV/OPre), also known as the List of Medical Aids (MiGeL), which lists medical aids reimbursable by the Swiss compulsory health insurance.
From July 1, 2026, the MiGeL List will include a new chapter 40 titled "Digital health applications (dGA) with medical purpose". These products are defined as software or apps (potentially utilizing AI or physical components) that utilize digitally documented data to perform medical evaluations and provide individualized recommendations.
Chapter 40 introduces a general limitation requiring that clinical evidence of efficacy and appropriateness is available for a specific dGA. Furthermore, the prescribed dGA must demonstrate treatment progress, a learning effect, and/or facilitate independent disease management.
The first product category introduced belongs to the Sub-chapter 40.01 "Mental and behavioral disorders". Starting July 1, 2026, it will include a generic category 40.01.01.00.1 for interactive dGA for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for depression, designed for sole self-application. The tariff of 171.32 CHF covers a 90-day license. The MiGeL List provides specifications regarding indications, prescribers, and usage context for this new reimbursement category.
This new reimbursement category is explicitly registered with the status "In evaluation until December 31, 2026", which means it falls under the Coverage with Evidence Development scheme (Leistungen in Evaluation).
