Applications for Med Tech-related subsidy programs are now open in the Netherlands
In April 2025, the Dutch Organization for Health Research and Development (ZonMw) announced the submission of grant applications for subsidy rounds for two Med Tech-related programs: the Innovative Medical Devices Initiative (IMDI) program and the Care Evaluation and Appropriate Use program.
The IMDI program focuses on the development and application of medical technology to mitigate the growing shortage of healthcare professionals and enhance access to healthcare within individuals' living environments.
- On April 15, 2025, the subsidy round “Technology for Staffable Care – Demand-driven innovations” of the IMDI program was opened. The subsidy round is intended for projects aimed at developing technological innovations for keeping healthcare staffed and affordable, based on questions from healthcare practice and their validation in healthcare practice. The total available subsidy budget is €3 million. The maximum budget for individual research proposals is €600,000 per application, and the maximum requested period for the research is 36 months. The deadline for submitting a detailed grant application is October 14, 2025.
The Care Evaluation and Appropriate Use program (Zorgevaluatie en Gepast Gebruik, ZE&GG) aims to implement appropriate care by evaluating and implementing knowledge about what constitutes appropriate care. The results of care evaluations within the Program will change medical practice. The Program is a joint initiative of all parties involved in medical specialist care, with the ZonMw and the Dutch Healthcare Institute (ZIN) as strategic partners.
- On April 15, 2025, the subsidy round “Impactful knowledge questions in medical specialist care” of the ZE&GG program started. The subsidy round focuses on the evaluation research of knowledge questions submitted by the Federation of Medical Specialists (FMS), the Dutch Nurses and Caregivers (V&VN), Health Insurers Netherlands (ZN), and the Dutch Healthcare Institute. The knowledge questions are questions about existing medical care that is already applied in practice but for which there is still insufficient scientific evidence. A grant application can only be submitted by a main applicant from the Dutch research organization or a healthcare institution in co-creation and recommendation from parties involved in the ZE&GG program. The total available subsidy budget is €2.5 million. There are no restrictions on the maximum budget for individual research proposals. The maximum duration of a project is 10 years. The deadline for submitting a detailed grant application is November 4, 2025.
