Public Health England has published key performance indicators for NHS population screening programmes in England for 2017 to 2018
Eleven national population screening programmes are implemented in the NHS on the advice of the UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC), which makes independent, evidence-based recommendations to ministers in the 4 UK countries. The Screening Quality Assurance Service ensures programmes are safe and effective by checking that national standards are met.
There are 11 national screening programmes for young person, adult, antenatal and newborn. Key performance indicators (KPI) for each programme are presented below:
- NHS abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) programme:
- Coverage of initial screen
- Coverage of annual surveillance screen
- Coverage of quarterly surveillance screen
- NHS bowel cancer screening (BCSP) programme:
- Uptake
- Coverage
- NHS breast screening (BSP) programme:
- Uptake
- Screening round length
- NHS cervical screening (CSP) programme:
- coverage (under 50)
- coverage (50 and above)
- NHS diabetic eye screening (DES) programme:
- Uptake of routine digital screening event
- Results issued within 3 weeks of routine digital screening, digital surveillance or slit lamp biomicroscopy
- Timely assessment for R3A screen positive
- NHS fetal anomaly screening programme (FASP):
- Completion of laboratory request forms
- Ultrasound coverage
- NHS infectious diseases in pregnancy screening (IDPS) programme:
- HIV coverage
- Timely assessment of women with hepatitis B
- Hepatitis B coverage
- Syphilis coverage
- NHS newborn and infant physical examination (NIPE) screening programme:
- Coverage (newborn)
- Timely assessment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH)
- NHS newborn blood spot (NBS) screening programme:
- Coverage (CCG responsibility at birth)
- Avoidable repeat tests
- Coverage (movers in)
- NHS newborn hearing screening programme (NHSP):
- Coverage
- Time from screening outcome to attendance at an audiological assessment appointment
- NHS sickle cell and thalassaemia (SCT) screening programme:
- Coverage
- Timeliness of test
- Completion of FOQ
There are the following changes of KPIs in 2017-18:
- Antenatal infectious disease screening: new KPIs implemented for hepatitis B coverage and syphilis coverage;
- Diabetic eye screening (DES): name changed from “Diabetic eye screening – results issued within 3 weeks of routine digital screening” to “Diabetic eye screening - results issued within 3 weeks of routine digital screening, digital surveillance or slit lamp biomicroscopy”
- Bowel, breast and cervical KPIs: KPIs for the bowel cancer, breast, and cervical screening programmes added to the document.
