NHS Access Accelerated Collaborative updated Innovation and Technology payment program for 2020/21
In November 2020, NHS Accelerated Access Collaborative updated the Innovation and Technology Payment (ITP) program for 2020/21.
The ITP aims to remove barriers to the spread and adoption of innovative products or technologies (medical devices, digital platforms, and technologies), including financial negotiations. It is a competitive process designed to scale up the adoption of innovations and technologies that have already proved their clinical effectiveness and are ready for nationwide spread
To be selected for the ITP, products needed to meet the following criteria:
- NICE support (through a Medtech Innovation Briefing or Guidance)
- Positive in-year return on investment
- Use in at least three NHS organizations
The 2020/21 ITP program builds on the Innovation and Technology Tariff (ITT) and ITP 2019/20 and is continuing to support eight products:
- Placental growth factor (PIGF) based tests for the rule out of pre-eclampsia
- HeartFlow FFRCT – advanced image analysis software that creates a 3D model of the coronary arteries to help rapidly diagnose patients with suspected coronary artery disease from coronary CT angiography
- gammaCore – non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation therapy for the treatment of cluster headaches
- SpaceOAR – an absorbable spacer to reduce rectum radiation exposure during prostate radiation therapy
- Non-Injectable Arterial Connector – an arterial connecting system to reduce bacterial contamination and the accidental administration of medication
- Plus Sutures – a new type of surgical suture that reduces the rate of Surgical Site Infection (SSI)
- SecurAcath - a device to secure catheters for patients with a peripherally inserted central catheter
- Endocuff Vision – a new type of ‘bowel scope’ that improves colorectal examination for patients undergoing bowel cancer tests
Additionally, two technologies received continued support through the Evidence Generation Fund:
- Digital apps to support emergency/crisis mental health assessments
- Interoperable personal health record tool
