NHS Accelerated Access Collaborative planning to launch MedTech Funding Mandate in April 2021

In November 2020, NHS Accelerated Access Collaborative (ACC) published their plans for further introducing MedTech Funding Mandate after the COVID-19 outbreak.

According to the NHS Long Term Plan, introducing a MedTech Funding Mandate will support getting innovative medical devices, diagnostics, and digital products to patients faster. The Medtech Funding Mandate policy received strong support with clear recommendations on the criteria for inclusion technologies in 2019/20. However, the launch of the Medtech Funding Mandate was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The MedTech Funding Mandate launch is planned for April 2021. The policy and the consultation outcome report will be published this winter to confirm the final criteria, the technologies that it will cover, and additional implementation support. ACC will highlight these technologies at least twice a year, working with the suppliers of these technologies to support their inclusion. This new policy will not affect the existing funding for technologies with a positive NICE Technology Appraisal.

To support the implementation of innovations within NHS organizations and identify barriers to their uptake, AAC will also collaborate with patients and the Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs) to understand local and regional issues and share learning from NHS organizations already implemented the innovations.

All the recommended innovations are effective and cost-saving, so this policy will both improve patient care and save the NHS money. Hospitals and commissioning organizations are expected to comply with the policy guidance where appropriate.
