In June 2023, NHS England published two new specialized service specifications.
Pediatric photon radiotherapy service:
- This specification relates to children and adolescents up to their 16th birthday who are within the national commissioning responsibility of NHS England and require treatment with external beam radiotherapy - radical, palliative, or total body irradiation;
- The document outlines the aim of the service, patient pathway, conditions of provision, requirements for staff and facilities, and expected outcomes;
- It is mentioned that providers should utilize improvement approaches to implement best practices, including access to linear accelerators with the facility for rotational intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), and on-treatment position volumetric imaging, as appropriate.
Interim service specification for specialist gender incongruence services for children and young people:
- The document sets out how care will be provided to children and young people and their families who express gender incongruence and who are likely to benefit from clinical support.
