New reimbursement regulation about mechanical thrombectomy in Belgium

On June 6, 2023, the National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance (INAMI/RIZIV) introduced a new convention to reimburse mechanical thrombectomy in case of a stock shortage of thrombolytic drugs in Belgium. Hospitals can join the convention for two years, but the financing will only be provided in case of thrombolytic drugs shortage per two-month period.

The aspirational and mechanical thrombectomy catheters will be reimbursed in the following clinical indications: arterial thrombosis, deep vein thrombosis, arteriovenous fistula in a hemodialysis patient, and pulmonary embolism.

The convention outlines specific reimbursement conditions that must be fulfilled and a list of brands eligible for reimbursement depending on the clinical indications.
