A new annual budget of €20 million for breast cancer genomic tests established in Italy

On July 7, 2021, a Decree which defines the new annual budget of €20 million for breast cancer genomic tests has been published in the Official Gazette and has, thus, entered into force. The Decree (of May 18, 2021) describes the access procedure and the requirements for the disbursement of the budget allocated to a specific Fund by the Budget Law (Law 178/2020).

This Fund will provide “free” access (not paid by the regions like regular care, but paid from this new national Fund) to the genomic testing to women from all Italian regions who could benefit from the testing to ensure the appropriateness and equity of care. The prescription of genomic tests will be made by multidisciplinary teams of the Breast Centers, determined by the Regions, who take care of the patients.
