Laboratory test nomenclature updated in Finland

On December 18, 2023, the updated version of the laboratory test nomenclature was published by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) to come into force on January 1, 2024. The nomenclature is maintained by the Association of Local and Regional Authorities. It covers studies in clinical chemistry, clinical physiology, clinical microbiology, clinical neurophysiology, genetics, pathology, and functional diagnostic tests (such as spirometry or ECG) and is used to unify coding laboratory procedures in Finland. The Laboratory Tests Nomenclature is also used to code the tests in private settings with coverage from the national public payor (KELA).

Sixty new codes were introduced in the updated version concerning in-vitro diagnostics and functional diagnostic tests in the cardiology, pulmonology, and gastroenterology fields. Some examples of newly introduced codes are provided below:

  • 6781 ECG, long-term registration (48 h), connection, analysis without consultation;
  • 6788 Esophagus and cardia pH measurement without consultation;
  • 6804 F-Enterovirus, nucleic acid (qual);
  • 6808 S-C-reactive protein, a sensitive method;
  • 6769 Oscillometric respiratory impedance and bronchodilation test without consultation;
  • 6800 Spirometry serial measurements, exposure or stress;
  • 6766 Impedance pneumography during sleep, long-term registration, consultation.

For in-vitro diagnostic tests, the letter before the code name specifies the sample type: S - serum, F – feces.
