Designation of Benchmark centers of the Spanish National Health System in October 2024

In October 2024, the Agreements on new pathologies and procedures for the care of which it is necessary to designate Benchmark centers, departments, and units of the National Health System (CSURs) were approved in the cardiovascular, endoscopy, gastrointestinal, nephrology, and urology, obstetrics and gynecology, surgical procedures, neuromodulation, and peripheral vascular fields. Some examples of newly approved pathologies and procedures include:

  • Aortic valve preserving surgery in adults (five centers);
  • Endoscopic ultrasound-guided drainage of complex biliary-pancreatic obstruction (four centers);
  • Complex esophageal atresia (three centers);
  • Disorders of sex development (DSD), excluding congenital adrenal hyperplasia (centers to be designated in future);
  • Electrode extraction in adults (seven centers);
  • Complex hepatic vascular disease in adults (five centers).

In addition, several CSURs were designated or redesignated for previously approved pathologies and procedures in the cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, and pulmonary and airways fields. Some examples are provided below:

  • Complex mitral valve repair surgery in adults (four centers);
  • Pancreas transplantation (five centers);
  • Adult cardiopulmonary transplantation (two centers).

The CSURs are centers accredited by the Ministry of Health to treat rare or complex pathologies.
